Beating the Kansas Heat: What Belongs in Climate-Controlled Storage

Kansas does not do mild. Summers are hot and humid, winters drop below freezing, and a standard storage unit rides every one of those swings. For a lot of what people store, that is fine. For the things you actually care about, it is not. Here is how to tell the difference and decide whether climate control is worth it for you.

What the heat and humidity actually do

A non-climate unit can swing from baking to freezing across a year, and humidity is the quiet troublemaker. Heat and moisture warp and crack wood, mildew fabric and paper, rust metal, bubble veneer, and shorten the life of electronics. The damage is gradual, so you often do not see it until you pull everything out months later. Climate control holds a steady temperature and humidity year round so what goes in is what comes out.

What belongs in climate-controlled storage

• Wood and upholstered furniture
• Electronics and appliances
• Photos, documents, and books
• Instruments and artwork
• Leather, and anything that warps, fades, or mildews

What is fine in a drive-up unit

Plenty does not need climate control: tools and yard equipment, patio and outdoor furniture, totes of sturdy household goods, and seasonal or holiday gear. If an item would sit happily in a garage, a drive-up unit is the cheaper, convenient choice, and you can pull right up to the door.

Is it worth the extra cost?

Climate control runs a small premium over a standard unit of the same size. The way we put it to customers: if replacing the item would cost more than the difference, or you simply could not replace it, store it climate-controlled. For a grandmother’s dresser or a box of photos, it is an easy call. For a lawn mower, save your money.

What about a short summer store?

Even a few months over a Kansas summer is enough to warp a tabletop or fog up electronics, so the rule does not change for a short store: it is about what you are keeping, not how long.
